Egress Modeling

Evacuation time is not distance divided by walking speed. People need time to believe the alarm and start moving, their speed drops as the route fills up, and in the end a door or a stair governs the result. Egress modeling calculates all of that to produce the required safe egress time (RSET) and a clear map of where congestion forms.

What the service covers:

  • Occupant load for each space, with a realistic distribution of people at the time of the incident.
  • Occupant characteristics: ages, walking speeds, the proportion with reduced mobility, and groups that move together.
  • Detection, alarm and pre-movement times as a statistical distribution per area, agreed with the authority.
  • Multiple scenarios: total or phased evacuation, an exit out of service, and a route lost to smoke.
  • Analysis of the results: clearance time per floor, where queues form and for how long, and the effect of changing exit and stair widths.

When you need it: high-occupancy projects such as malls, airports, stadiums and event halls; buildings with complex geometry or phased evacuation; and any travel distance or exit arrangement that needs engineering proof.

To establish the available time and compare it with the required time, the results are combined with fire and smoke modeling. Read more about how evacuation time is calculated.

Occupant load, building model and evacuation scenarios
Pre-movement times as a distribution per area, not one number
Congestion points and the clearance time of each floor
Occupants with reduced mobility and refuge areas accounted for
Results turned into stair widths, exit locations and an evacuation plan
