Performance-Based Design (FDS & Egress Modeling)

Demonstrating life safety takes more than one simulation: smoke movement sets how long the escape route stays usable, and people movement sets how long occupants need to leave. This package runs both studies together and produces a single, reviewable answer: is the available time greater than the required time by an acceptable margin?

What the package covers:

  • Fire and smoke modeling for visibility, temperature, radiant heat and smoke layer height over time.
  • Egress modeling for detection, alarm, pre-movement, travel and queuing times.
  • Multiple scenarios: total or phased evacuation, a fan or an exit out of service, and delayed system activation.
  • A comparison of both results at the critical points, with a sensitivity check on the main assumptions.
  • One report documenting the tools, their versions and the basis of validation, ready for submission.

When you need it: when you have a departure from the prescriptive requirements to justify, a large space that the algebraic methods cannot assess, or a high-occupancy project whose design has to stand up to the authority's review.

If you only need one of the two studies, each is available on its own. When the goal is a design decision or approval of an alternative solution, the combined package is faster, because it builds the same assumptions into both studies and keeps them consistent. See the performance-based design approach.

Fire and smoke modeling and egress modeling in a single study
Available versus required egress time, with a safety margin
Multiple scenarios, including a system or an exit out of service
Results measured and visualised at the critical points of the escape route
One report that supports the alternative solution before the authority
